Summer Wellness 2017

Summertime is such a fleeting season, so it’s no wonder that we’re itching to get outside and make the most out of the warmest weather of the year. Whether you’re checking out Toronto’s many festivals or keen on camping or going to the cottage outside the city, here are a few of our favourite tips and products to keep healthy while having fun!

Stay hydrated

Drinking water is one of the best ways to combat dehydration, keep cool, and replenish moisture in the skin! Keep a reusable water bottle handy, and drink whenever you’re thirsty, feeling hot, or need an instant energy boost. Water too boring for you? Try out some cold brewed green tea, or add some lemon slices, mint, or cucumbers to your water to add flavour and a dose of vitamin C and magnesium. Our popular S’Well Bottles (starting from $29 for a 260ml size) keeps beverages cold for up to 24 hours, and is triple-wall insulated to prevent condensation on the outer surface so it won’t get wet.

Practice sun safety

Although sunscreen should be applied year-round, it’s especially important during the summer months due to the longer hours of sunlight and more outdoor activity. Ultraviolet rays from the sun are the number one cause of skin cancer, so choose a natural sunscreen that provides physical protection with zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, rather than a chemical sunscreen that can react negatively with your skin.  We feature brands such as ThinkSport ($18), Green Beaver ($20), and Badger Balm ($15) to encourage the entire family to embrace sunblock as part of a routine to maintain health and wellness.

Relieve headaches

Hotter temperature means more pressure and humidity in the air – which can trigger migraines and headaches. Peppermint has been known as a natural remedy to ease tension and pain with its calming and numbing properties, and our Peppermint Stick ($10) is a natural product that can be applied to the forehead, temples, and back of neck for instant relief. Its small size means that it can be tucked away in your bag for use during those long summer days, the drive out to cottage country, or any time you feel a headache coming.

Repel mosquitoes

Protect yourself from bites by using a natural repellent this summer. Essential oils like lemon eucalyptus, citronella, and catnip are known deterrents, and a blend like DoTerra’s TerraShield ($18) has a combination of all these and more to prevent those pesky bugs from coming close. Use the oil in a diffuser, or mix it in your own repellent spray using the following recipe.

  • In a 4oz glass spray bottle, combine:
  • 90% water and 10% isopropyl alcohol (the alcohol aids in mixing the oil and water)
  • 20 drops of TerraShield Essential Oil Blend
  • Shake well before using and spray anywhere on your body and hair to keep those mosquitoes away

Care for your skin

Sun, sweat, and pollution can wreak havoc on our faces, so combat it with a toner spray that will keep your face gently cleansed and hydrated.  Wildcraft’s Geranium Orange Blossom Toner ($16) is a refreshing burst of natural ingredients like orange flower water, witch hazel, aloe vera juice, and geranium essential oil that are anti-microbial and moisturizing. It’s portable enough to carry everywhere, easy to use, and the scent is fresh, citrusy, and perfectly matches the summer season! Bonus: if you store it in the fridge, it’s a great pick-me up for tired and overheated skin.
